Dell installs solar panels in HQ carpark
Dell has just finished installing solar panels in the car park of its HQ in Round Rock, Texas. Known as a solar grove, they have worked with Envision Solar to produce this renewable energy source.
It will be expanded into a parked plug in for electric cars at some point soon.
They apparently can produce 131,000KWh a year from the 516 individual solar panels. They have the added benefit of sheltering the cars underneath them from the sunshine too!
Cheers

p.s.Interesting choice of vehicles for an HQ carpark - unless they have down graded, the execs and VPs don't appear to use the facilities shown in this photo! Unless Porche or Ferrai do an electric car....

While Envision Solar touts its accomplishment, the true accolades belong to McBride Electric located in Austin (Round Rock) Texas. It was McBride Electric that was the general contractor for Dell Computers and chose to use Envision for the structural design of the “Trees”. They [McBride] utilized other contractors for various portions of the project on various trades. Though there were significant issues involved with the structural steel by Envision that caused McBride to make in-the-field repairs and changes to the assembly, McBride overcame those obstacles and produced a great landmark installation for Dell. This is obviously just the very first of many installation of both covered parking and most likely roof top mounted photovoltaic system that Dell will be installing. The credit belongs to those at the general contractor [McBride Electric] and Dell for an outstanding project. I watched the building of this outside of my window. The parking is for any and all employees not just the execs.
Hey Jonathan,
thanks for the clarification. It is always interesting to see a view of what happened from someone who was there rather than just who shouted the loudest in the media. The concept is great and if more companies did things like this it would make such a big difference.
